Take a Bite! Stories are an awesome and screen-free distraction when you just need your little one to eat something! But, if you need more help, read on...
(Because sometimes it's not about the food)
Did you know that most kids in our listener range need 10-12 hours of sleep per 24 hour period?! A tired child will have trouble focusing, and bingo, experience loss of appetite. So address this issue first by getting your little one to bed earlier! You will be so surprised at how much better a rested kiddo will eat.
Did you know that kids ages 2-5 should only have 1 hour of screen time per day?! Too much time on that tablet can cause hyperactivity and sleep issues which can lead to, you guessed it, picky eating. See how it's all connected?
This one seems obvious, but it's so important! Making sure your child gets enough heart-pumping exercise is key in working up an appetite. Rainy day? Try jump-rope or any kids' exercise videos on YouTube...there are so many great ones to get those bodies moving!
Fix those sneaky causes above first. Then give these tricks a try!
Make sure your child's plate has a few different kinds of fruits or veggies to go with that main course (just a bite or two of each if it's a first try!) This way, your child has control over which items they pick. Tell them they don't have to eat it all... just one of the choices. They will think that they've won. Win win.
Chatting during meals is a great way to get kids eating! They will be focused on things other than their plate. Bites will come automatically (it's ok for you to give them a forkful while they are deep in a convo, too!)
Sugary treats before meals can make kids hyper and jittery. And, yep, they will then have trouble sitting for meals! Eating lots of processed foods and sugars will also make it hard for your child to make healthy food choices on their own in the future. So make sure you model healthy eating and healthy lifestyle choices, too!
